Pope Leo
Okay, I never thought I’d say this, but this week, I’m actually proud to be an American. (Whew, that felt weird to type.) I mean, let’s be real: lately, the U.S. has felt like the punchline in every group chat. Our recent highlights include “No blackout at Newark Airport” and “Only minor delays at LaGuardia.” If that’s not a low bar, I don’t know what is. It’s like we’re living in the blooper reel of a reality show.
But then, bam! White smoke in the Vatican skies and boom, the announcement: we have a new pope. Now, if you’re like me, your first thoughts were probably, “Okay, cool, which European country did he come from this time?” Not trying to be a wet blanket, just realistic. But plot twist! Not an Italian, not a Latin American, not even someone from the Vatican’s usual rotation. Nope. The new pope is from Chicago. Yes, you read that right. Chicago, Illinois, USA. Cardinal Robert Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV, and yes, he’s American.
Now let me be clear: I’m not Catholic. Not even a little bit. I’ve never stepped foot inside the Vatican, and I only know what a conclave is because of Anderson Cooper and CNN but you know what? This still feels like a win. With everything going on, economic stress, political chaos, broken infrastructure it’s kind of nice to see America pull off something surprising, historic, and actually kind of cool.
Even wilder? He went to Villanova. At this point, I fully expected the next headline to read: “Pope Leo XIV Declares Knicks Fanhood,” because if you’ve been paying attention, the Knicks have become the unofficial Villanova alumni team. He hasn’t said it yet, but I’m telling you now, if the Pope ever pulls up court-side at Madison Square Garden, the place will explode. Spike Lee x the Pope!
But seriously, this moment gave me a little déjà vu. It reminded me of 2008, when another Chicago native, Barack Obama, became the first African American president of the United States. The pride. The energy. The way the entire country held its breath and thought, “Wow, maybe we can do something extraordinary.” Maybe it’s something in that deep-dish pizza. Or maybe Chicago’s just got that magic. Whatever it is, they’re on a roll when it comes to firsts that makes you feel something real.
So, congrats to Pope Leo XIV. You’ve already done something huge, reminded us that Americans can still rise to historic moments, even if we’re used to being the comic relief on the world stage. And maybe, just maybe, your leadership will bring something fresh, inclusive, and hopeful to a world that needs it.
You’ve given America a reason to smile this week, and honestly? We really needed it.

Love this — great perspective during a challenging time (understatement) in U.S. history.
I really enjoyed the hope vibe!
